Cry Hiking , 2021-2023

Cry Hiking (2021–2023), initially presented as a performative lecture at Vermont Studio Center, shown as a single channel video as part of The Brooklyn Rail's New Social Environment Series (2021), and ultimately transformed into a three part, single channel video, as part of the Center for Complexity's exhibition Gateways into the Polycene!, (RISD, 2023), takes up one of the most pressing claims made by Sylvia Wynter in her epic text "The Ceremony Must Be Found: After Humanism." Wynter argues that "Natural Man'' the processor of Reason and his attendant "ordering body of knowledge" is in crisis. This film presents the viewer/participant with possibilities for new ways of thinking and acting that challenge, undo, and redress inherited bodies of knowledge and behavior including assumptions about lifespan, productivity, and aliveness as pre-conditions for meaningful contributions to one's surroundings.
